3 Steps To Making Videos That Connect With Your Audience

3 Steps To Making Videos That Connect With Your Audience

Expert Author Roy J Derrick
It seems that more and more of us are now waking up to the power of making videos and downloading them on to video sharing sites; whether it's to promote our business, show off a talent or even to ridicule ourselves by downloading funny video clips of our mishaps. It seems that we will now go to any lengths to attract an audience to ourselves or our brands. However, with the completion now being so rife, what steps can you take to try to lure viewers to your video over those of your competitors, especially if you are making business videos?
Step 1: Grabbing attention with a powerful headline
Making a video is similar to many other forms of promotion e.g. writing articles, blogs or sales letters, in that you will need to first of all lure your audience via an attention grabbing headline. As with any other copy you will need ensure that you use powerful keywords in order for your video to show within search engines searches, but the key to the success of your video is how you then craft those keywords into a compelling headline- something that helps your video to stand out over those of your competitors.
For example below are 2 quick examples of a video headline promoting DVDs that relieve back pain through exercise.
Example 1: How to relieve back pain through exercise.
Example 2: How to relieve back pain, without medication, in 30 days
Both have the same main keywords of "how to relieve back pain" but the second example is more immediately appealing as it states that it will have an effect within a defined period i.e. Within 30 days.
Step 2: Break State
Having drawn the viewer in with a powerful headline, the next step is to take any steps necessary to ensure that they don't press the dreaded back tab button. The best way to do this is by what is referred to as "breaking state."
Breaking state is when you hook the viewer in by starting your presentation by speaking about something totally random-something that is not remotely connected to what you are about to talk about. For example you could start by saying something like;
"Is that burgers that I can smell?"
Immediately you will have captivated the viewer into wondering what on earth you are talking about when they have tuned in to watch something on a totally different topic. This "off the wall" tactic will have helped you to engage with your audience and to stand out from your competitors. This is particularly important to do if you are competing within a saturated market such as trying to promote work from home ideas.
Step 3: Tell a better story
Rags to riches stories within business videos have become somewhat clichéd and predictable. However, including a story when making a video is still advisable as it will you to connect with your audience by helping to portray you as a "real person."
The secret is to tell your story in a more unique way- in a way that relates personally to you. For example, try to include some humour within your presentation and try to ensure that your content is valuable and offers a reason for the viewer to want to continue watching until the end. If you have helped others with what you're offering, then try to include those examples too as offering social proof is one the best ways of building up trust with your audience.
Try to make your content as interesting as possible and try to whet the viewer's appetite to want to find out more. To help you do this, just think about the opening of your favourite films. What was it about those films that ensured that you watched them right until the end? Was it the power of the story? Or the suspense that it built up from the beginning or did it just intrigue you in some way or pull at your heart strings?
Whatever the reason was, try to promote your business promote your business or your personal message or story in a similar way. Offer good value and an obvious benefit for the viewer if they watch it through until the end.
Making videos is very similar to public speaking in that the more unique and genuine that you are in presenting your message, the better your chances are of connecting with your target audience.
