Starting Your Own Business - Do You Have What It Takes
Let me start off by asking a question. What do you think is the main ingredient needed in order to run your own successful business? Capital is one and you have to have a certain knowledge or capability in order to succeed. But the main ingredient, or ingredients to be correct, are flair, toughness and a fair amount of good luck. Not many can cope in the small business world without a certain degree of good fortune. But you do make your own luck and that is all down to decision making. You have to be committed to the task in hand and not be downhearted if things start off slowly and the expected profit fails to materialise in the allotted timescale. As long as your initial preparations are thorough i. e. product and market research then you will well on the road to success. There is no such thing as an "overnight success"!
You also should have a valid reason for wanting to start your own business. If you are dissatisfied with working for an employer then that is not a valid enough reason. Your judgement will be impaired and wrong, even disastrous, decisions made on the spur of the moment. Everything you decide must be done with cold hard logic as your guide. The old adage "Fail to prepare, prepare to fail" certainly rings true in the business world. Importantly your start up capital should be set aside and classed as spent. Another thing to consider is the fact that if you thought working for someone else was hard you will, in all probability, find yourself working harder and longer hours than ever before. You will certainly be earning far less at the outset and holidays will be scarce. Does it still appeal?
Marriages can suffer as a result of the time spent establishing the business. Therefore it is best to make sure that family members are made aware of the challenge that lies ahead. Commitment from the family is just as important as your own. As well as moral support family members can have their uses as unpaid (or cheap) labour. You should also make them aware that the family's security is dependent on your success and family time will suffer as a result. One final thing is that the reason you are doing this i. e. extra money will take time and the rewards of your success will take some time to come to fruition.
Starting a business whether from home or other premises is not for everybody. But as long as the main points above are addressed then success could and I repeat could come your way. Good luck!
