Working at home has numerous perceptions. These perceptions are based largely on the flashy, high dollar Internet Guru's out there saying that it's possible to make enormous amounts of money working an hour or two per day. These are the people who give a poor public perception of the realities of actually working for a living, which is what internet marketing and working from home is really about. These are the people who "guarantee" fortunes if you pay them $29.99 (or whatever amount) and they will provide you with the key to wealth. That is the perception - because these people are everywhere on the internet. They are just predators taking advantage of their prey (that would be you and I).

That is the "dark side". The bright side is that there is a possibility of earning an income working from home. But like any thing in life, you get out of it what you put into it and it takes a great deal of work to make it happen. And it doesn't happen with a payment to some company and the push of a button that results in waking the next morning with riches in your bank account. This is the reality - it takes weeks and months to begin to generate any income and even years to really make it to the top.

The Perception

The perception of making money from home is actually two-fold. First is the perception that you will be rich overnight. As previously referenced, there are people out there who prey on others and essentially steal their money. This is really no different than in any other part of life where there are predators just waiting to lighten your wallet in whatever you do. It just becomes more apparent in the internet marketing world because most of those looking for work from home are unemployed people who, due to the current economy, are looking for alternate revenue streams. These people (in full disclosure, me being one of them) see the flashy videos promising an easy income in your spare time. As a person who's current job is to find a full time job, and utilizing the internet to perform job searches a couple of things happen.

First, the Guru's are all over the job search engines with great promises of an income, which are words that one definitely wants to hear. Second, the promised ability to produce this income in only a few hours a day works well with a job hunters schedule. So the $29.99 sounds like a pretty sweet deal to generate some needed cash to provide for the family while still being able to search for a job. The promise of flexible hours also works well with being able schedule and attend job interviews. Except it isn't just the initial $29.99 to gain access to the "gold mine", after that there's another $100 or so to get hosting and a domain, then another $79.99 to upgrade to the video package, and on and on until you've got nearly a thousand dollars wrapped up in a website that is completely controlled by someone else that just used your thousand dollars for their profit.

The second part of the perception is the reaction from family, friends and other peers who look at the work from home business like you're a traveling snake oil salesman. Trying to convince them that there is a reality to working from home is very difficult due to the poor reputation that the industry has gained - once again due to the Guru's out there stealing money from the people who need it most. And you can't blame those around you, who have a regular income and have heard about the internet scams, to think that you're crazy for attempting it. And they are correct if you follow that path.

There are so many people out of work for whatever reason. They search classified ads and fill out applications in hopes of getting hired somewhere. Most folks with a good head on their shoulders wouldn't ever bother looking for work on websites that promote 'legit online' jobs. Why is this? Let's face it. Any time you see the words "make money from home online" or "legit work from home opportunities", it just puts a bad taste in your mouth, doesn't it? At least, whenever I see some ad on my computer screen pop up that promotes so called "work from home jobs", I know NOT to click on it; it just feels cheap and trashy because most people know these companies are scams. It's true; 29 out of 30 companies that claim to be legit work from home online businesses are actually fraudulent in some way. That's a really sad statistic and it means there are way too many people out there being taken advantage of by these companies that offer nothing but get rich quick hype.

Lately, I've been spending a lot of my free time trying to learn more about these so called work from home opportunities and websites that apparently offer legit online jobs to innocent people like myself. I've been searching for a treasure in hopes of finding at least one truly legit work from home company. And guess what? To my surprise, I did recently stumble upon a little gem, and I've made several hundred dollars off of them. I know that's not a lot, but it's still something. I'd like you to know that there really ARE legit ways you can make at least a second income online. Here are a few of the legit online jobs that I have found; I guarantee you can make some good money with these too:

• Traditional Data Entry - You listen to audio files of focus groups or interviews and type out everything that's spoken, word for word.


• Global Data Entry - You paste special web links to different high traffic places on the internet. Any time someone clicks on these links, you get money deposited into your bank account.


• Content Article Writing - You write short articles for companies in need of them. They are easy to complete and you can make some great money just for writing short articles.

There are quite a few other legit online jobs I found, but these are just three for now that I thought to be very interesting. So far, I've made the most money with Traditional Data Entry, and while it doesn't pay the bills, I've earned way more money than I ever could have expected to earn.

I created a lead capture page, a follow-up email series and actively advertised that capture page. I first started using free advertising techniques to build my business. I started writing articles and submitting them to the top article directories. And the most beautiful thing about this is the people who read my articles were much more likely to join my mailing list. Why is this?

They decided that I gave value. I didn't beg them to purchase my products. If you were on a first date, would you ask that person to come home with you? No way! I guess it depends on what you were going to do. LOL. But here's my point. I discussed something that they could get value from. Then, they see my call to action at the bottom of the article. They decide to click on that link, and join my list.

You can do this too. Once they are on your list, don't bomb them with sales pitch after sales pitch. Offer some value. Create a follow-up series that teaches them something really cool. Once they've learned from you, they will decide whether they want to purchase your products.

Gourmet mushroom growers, large and small, always end up with harvested mushrooms that are not good enough for fresh sales to consumers. The mushrooms may have cosmetic defects, or you may have more mushrooms than customers. One of the best ways to turn that surplus into profits is to make value-added products to sell that can be stored until sold.

Here are seven of the best value-added mushroom products - all easy to process, and requiring no expensive equipment or packaging:

1. Mushroom jerky. This is a popular snack for vegetarians and non-vegetarians as well. Oyster mushrooms are best, and easy to prepare. Simply remove the gills, clean and marinate in diluted soy sauce (1 cup water and 2 tablespoons soy sauce) for an hour or so, then drain. Bake until tender, then place in a food dehydrator until dry. Package in plastic bags with a well-designed label. These are delicious, so be sure to give out samples to passerby's at the farmer's market.

2. Pickled mushrooms. These have been a popular snack in Europe for centuries, and can be customized with other foods, like onions, or seasoned with a variety of herbs or spices, like garlic. Start with a basic recipe - just do an internet search for "pickled mushrooms" - then pick the recipe that works best for your taste buds. If you use your imagination, you can transform plain pickled mushrooms into a gourmet delicacy that brings high prices and profits at the Saturday market. Imaginative packaging, such as a special glass jar, a cute label and a simple raffia bow on the jar, can complete the gourmet image.

3. Mushroom seasonings. A blend of finely ground dried mushrooms and coarsely-ground sea salt is a popular item at farmer's markets, as well as blends of mushroom powder and dried herbs, such as an Italian blend, which complements a roasted chicken or a savory soup.

4. Dried mushrooms. This is a perfect solution for blemished or unsold fresh mushrooms. Most mushroom varieties can be dried whole or dried in slices about 1/4 inch thick. You'll need a food dehydrator and packaging. Re-sealable glass jars work best, both for eye appeal at the farmer's market, and for ease of re-use. A customer can just tighten the lid to save any unused mushrooms for later.

5. Mushroom growing kits. Simple to make and very profitable, these one-use kits allow customers to experience the joy of growing and harvesting their own mushrooms without the work involved in preparing and inoculating the substrate. Most consist of just a plastic grow-bag filled with pre-inoculated substrate, such as sawdust, inside a cardboard box. Because shipping is expensive, you can sell kits locally for a lot less than those sold on the internet, yet still make a solid profit. If at all possible, have a sample growing kit on display, complete with fruiting mushrooms, to help customers visualize what will happen at harvest time.

6. Medicinal mushrooms. Medicinal mushrooms can be sold fresh, dried or powdered to individual retail customers. Although many varieties of mushrooms are used for medicinal purposes, the F.D.A. does not allow anyone to make claims about their healing powers, especially claims that XX mushrooms can cure XX disease. Follow the example of supplement companies, who simply state that mushrooms can be used to "help support immune health."

Mushroom growers should follow state and federal regulations and any applicable food safety guidelines, including those that may be applicable to prepared mushroom products. Your state regulations may also require that food must be processed in a licensed kitchen. In some states, those selling at farmer's markets or direct to consumers from the farm may be exempt from this requirement. Your local county health department can tell you what regulations apply in your area.

As more growers produce and market fresh gourmet mushrooms like oyster mushrooms and shiitake mushrooms, those who also offer mushroom products will be better able to compete in the marketplace, as the markups can be substantial on value-added products. Let me start off by saying how awesome my day went. I just got back from the gym about 30 minutes ago and I couldn't be happier with my business. While I was at the gym keeping in shape, you know how it is, I made 3 sales at $25, and 2 at $100. As I write this, I can't help but think back to a time when I struggled. I worked my tail off for someone else, and in the four years I was employed with this person, I didn't get a single raise.

Now I want you to imagine getting a raise every day. What would that feel like to you? Would your life be different? Well, guess what? With the internet, you can do exactly that. If you are promoting a product that pays recurring commissions, you could essentially give yourself a raise every day. Now how big your raise is will depend on the product price. Those $25 sales and $100 sales were all residual commissions. That means that I earn that money every single month for as long the customer is paying for the service.

Now that's what I call leverage in your online business. You can't do this anywhere else. As far as I know, anyway. So let me ask you this. Are you willing to work for someone else and make dismal money at a job you don't even like? I know I wouldn't. That's why I work from home. I can make money from anywhere in the world. As long as I have an internet connection, I'm set.

But I am only able to do this because I set goals. I decided right from the beginning that I wanted to make a full-time income online. I even crunched some numbers and determined how many sales I would have to generate each month to accomplish this goal. Lastly, I set a schedule. I have a set time for my work. I write articles. I purchase paid media. I network with other marketers. I do whatever it takes to accomplish my dream.

If there is one piece of advice that I want to give you, it would be this: Focus your efforts on income producing activities. Marketing is an income producing activity. Without marketing, you wouldn't have a business. So what do I mean exactly?

I mean getting your products and services in-front of the people who are looking to purchase them. Positioning yourself directly in-front of these people and helping them with their problems. That's it. That's the secret that isn't a secret. Anyone can do this!
